NO Chemical insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers
These chemicals are in water soluble form and dissolve with surface water run-off when it's raining, poisoning water storage, streams, ponds, lakes and the sea.
-
NO CHEMICAL INSECTICIDES
We do not use insecticides such as organophosphate or organic thiophosphate compounds. Chemical insecticides such as Fenthion, Methidathion, or Chlorpyrifos Ethyl are toxic and are used to kill a broad-spectrum of insects including beneficial insects like Psyttalia Concolor and Metaphycus Helvolus, speciese of wasp that help kill black scale (Saissetia oleae) and the infamous Fruit Fly. -
NO CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS
Generations of farmers have used chemical fertilizers containing Nitrogen (Urea), Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium and Boron which are essential for olive tree growth and fruiting. We don't use chemical fertilizers as they unbalance the soil and create weed problems and cause issues with other organic vegetables growing in the olive groves. -
NO FUNGICIDES
There are fungicides that can be used even for organic farmers. We avoid the use of fungicides as they can affect mycorrhizal relationships within the soil. -
YES TO BIOLOGICAL PEST CONTROL
Since we do not use insecticides, our olive groves attract natural predators like Chilocorus bipustulatus, a ladybird beetle. A classic scale predator that patrols trunks and branches, feeding on scales (including S. oleae) and helps to clean up sooty-mold-prone colonies. Introduction of flowers and herbs attracts all types of beneficial insects that feed on various pests like thrips, mites, aphids, and moth eggs. We have a biodiverse range of dragonflies, birds, bats, owls, mice and snakes to complement. -
YES TO PERMACULTURE
Permaculture is an ethically-based design system that seeks to integrate human activity with natural ecology. Its goal is to create efficient, self-sustaining ecosystems by mimicking the patterns found in nature. This approach involves principles such as working with nature rather than against it, leading to sustainable, low-maintenance, and adaptable systems for food, energy, shelter, and more. Ultimately, permaculture promotes resilience and fosters a more stable future.
